Worship Leader / Worship & Music Ministry
About Temple Baptist Church
Temple Baptist Church is a welcoming, theologically grounded congregation in Columbia, South Carolina, united by a shared commitment to glorifying God through the faithful proclamation of His Word, vibrant corporate worship, and authentic Christian community. We are a people shaped by a rich Baptist heritage and anchored in the historic truths of the gospel, while remaining earnestly engaged with the spiritual needs of our city and generation. Our ministry is intentionally multi-generational — we believe that the family of God is most fully expressed when children, youth, adults, and senior members worship, serve, and grow together under one roof, united by one Spirit, and surrendered to one Lord.
Position Overview
The Worship Leader at Temple Baptist Church is a pastoral musician — a person who leads not merely from the platform, but from the heart of a shepherd. This role calls for the rare and vital convergence of musical excellence, spiritual maturity, and theological intentionality. The Worship Leader bears primary responsibility for planning, preparing, and leading the congregation in authentic, God-centered worship that reflects the full counsel of Scripture and the full diversity of our congregation.
This position is not simply a musical role; it is a ministry calling. The Worship Leader will cultivate a culture of worship that spans all ages and stages of life, weaving together the doctrinal depth of historic hymns with the immediacy and cultural engagement of theologically sound contemporary worship music. The ideal candidate understands that blended worship is not a stylistic compromise but a pastoral conviction — one that honors both the saints who have gone before us and those who are still finding their way in.
Ministry Identity
The Worship Leader at Temple Baptist Church is first and foremost a disciple of Jesus Christ and a servant of His church. Musical skill is essential; Christlike character is non-negotiable.
Core Responsibilities
A. Worship Planning & Leadership
Plan and lead all Sunday morning worship services and special services, including Christmas, Easter, Good Friday, and other significant occasions in the church calendar.
Curate a blended worship repertoire that intentionally incorporates traditional hymns, gospel classics, and contemporary worship songs selected for doctrinal integrity and congregational sing ability.
Collaborate closely with the Senior Pastor to align song selection, Scripture readings, and worship elements with sermon themes and the rhythms of the church year.
Prepare a detailed weekly order of worship and submit it to the Senior Pastor in advance for review and approval.
Lead worship with authenticity, musical excellence, and pastoral sensitivity — reading the congregation well and creating space for genuine encounter with God.
Oversee the effective use of worship technology, including ProPresenter, Planning Center Online, or equivalent platforms, ensuring a seamless and distraction-free worship experience.
B. Multi-Generational Worship Philosophy
Champion a worship culture that intentionally serves and honors every generation — children, youth, young adults, middle-aged adults, and senior members — within the same gathered body.
Select music that bridges generational preferences without sacrificing doctrinal integrity, demonstrating pastoral wisdom in repertoire decisions.
Communicate the theological and historical context behind worship songs, equipping the congregation to engage not just emotionally but intellectually and spiritually.
Create meaningful on-ramps for younger generations to participate in worship without alienating or dismissing the contributions and preferences of longtime members.
Facilitate intergenerational worship experiences — such as hymn-based services, special blended arrangements, and seasonal celebrations — that unite the body across age and background.
C. Team Building & Volunteer Development
Recruit, audition, and develop a gifted team of volunteer musicians, vocalists, and worship team members who are both musically capable and spiritually mature.
Lead weekly or bi-weekly rehearsals that are musically productive, spiritually enriching, and relationally warm — building genuine community among team members.
Provide mentorship, discipleship, and pastoral care to worship team members, investing in their growth as followers of Christ, not only as performers.
Cultivate a team environment marked by humility, excellence, accountability, and spiritual authenticity.
Identify and intentionally develop emerging musicians and singers within the congregation, nurturing the next generation of worship leaders.
Coordinate closely with audio/visual technicians and production volunteers to ensure technical excellence serves — and never distracts from — congregational worship.
D. Pastoral Leadership & Spiritual Formation
Serve as a visible spiritual leader within the church, modeling a life of personal worship, discipleship, and prayer that extends well beyond Sunday mornings.
Participate actively in staff meetings, all-church events, and pastoral care responsibilities as appropriate and as directed by the Senior Pastor.
Engage in ongoing theological and musical study, pursuing continued growth in both areas as a lifelong learner and practitioner.
Pray regularly and fervently for the congregation, the worship team, and the broader vision and mission of Temple Baptist Church.
Partner with children’s and youth ministry leaders to develop age-appropriate, theologically grounded worship experiences that disciple the next generation.
E. Administration & Communication
Manage the worship ministry budget responsibly, transparently, and in alignment with church financial policies.
Maintain and inventory all musical equipment, instruments, and technology, coordinating repairs and replacements as needed.
Communicate rehearsal schedules, set lists, service details, and relevant information to worship team members in a timely, organized, and professional manner.
Utilize Planning Center Online (or equivalent platform) to organize services, manage team scheduling, and maintain clear records of song usage and service history.
Coordinate with church office staff regarding bulletins, announcements, service programs, and other communication materials related to the worship ministry.

Multi-Generational Worship Philosophy
Temple Baptist Church holds a deeply convictional view of corporate worship: it is the primary purpose of the gathered church. When the body assembles, it does so first and foremost to ascribe worth to God — to declare His glory, rehearse His redemptive story, and respond in faith and gratitude to His grace. This conviction means that the gathered worship of our church must reflect the full breadth of the congregation. Worship belongs to every generation, every background, and every temperament within the family of God. It is not tailored for a target demographic; it is curated for a covenant community.
Blended worship is, for Temple Baptist Church, not a compromise but a conviction. We believe that the great hymns of the faith carry irreplaceable gifts: doctrinal depth, historical rootedness, and the voices of the saints who have faithfully worshipped before us. We also believe that theologically sound contemporary worship carries its own vital gifts: immediacy, cultural engagement, and a fresh doxology that connects the ancient gospel to the living moment. The Worship Leader at Temple Baptist Church is expected to articulate and embody this philosophy — neither dismissing the old as irrelevant nor fearing the new as threatening, but recognizing that the best of both traditions points to the same eternal God.
Leading multi-generational worship requires pastoral skill that goes beyond musical competence. It demands the ability to listen carefully to the congregation — to understand what a 74-year-old widow and a 19-year-old college student each need from a Sunday morning worship service — and to curate experiences that unite rather than divide. The Worship Leader must navigate these differences not by finding the lowest common denominator, but by finding the highest common ground: the person and work of Jesus Christ, proclaimed and sung with excellence and sincerity.
Every song selected for corporate worship at Temple Baptist Church will be evaluated through three essential lenses: doctrinal integrity (does this song teach truth accurately and avoid theological error?), sing ability (can this congregation actually sing this song together with understanding and engagement?), and congregational fit (does this song serve our specific body, in this specific season, in a way that draws us toward God rather than toward a performance?). Song selection is a theological act, and the Worship Leader will approach it with the seriousness and prayerfulness it deserves.
Character & Lifestyle Expectations
Temple Baptist Church believes that character precedes competency in ministry leadership. The following expectations are not peripheral — they are central to the role:
Lives a life consistent with Biblical standards of integrity, humility, and holiness in all personal and professional contexts.
Models authentic personal worship beyond Sunday services — privately seeking God in prayer, Scripture, and community throughout the week.
Maintains healthy relational boundaries and is above reproach in all relationships, consistent with the qualifications for ministry leadership outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.
Demonstrates a servant-leadership posture in all ministry contexts, putting the needs of the congregation and the team above personal preference or recognition.
Committed to ongoing spiritual formation, personal accountability, and continued growth in Christlikeness.
Fully supports the God-given vision and direction of the Senior Pastor and church leadership, working collaboratively and submissively within the established structure of authority.
