Don’t Let Summer Stall Your Candidate Search

Your church needs to fill a ministry role, but it is almost July, half your search committee is traveling, and the easy decision is to wait until fall. That pause feels reasonable. It is also how a six-week search becomes a six-month one. The best candidates do not sit idle waiting for your timeline, and the cost of an empty position compounds quietly all summer long.

The Hidden Cost of Waiting

Before you table the search until September, count what the delay actually costs:

  • Ministry gaps widen. An unfilled role means existing staff and volunteers absorb the load, and burnout builds fastest during the very season you assumed was slow.
  • Strong candidates get hired elsewhere. The person you would have wanted in August accepts another call in July. Good candidates rarely stay available for long.
  • Fall momentum starts behind. A hire made in late August or September cannot meaningfully shape your fall programming. A hire made in July can.

Keep Momentum Without Burning Out Your Team

You do not need your whole committee in one room to keep moving:

  1. Assign a point person. Let one committed member own communication and scheduling so the search keeps breathing even when the full team is scattered.
  2. Move interviews online. Video calls remove the travel barrier and let you keep talking to candidates through vacation season.
  3. Pre-decide your non-negotiables. Agree now on the convictions, competencies, and fit you require, so summer evaluations stay consistent and fast.
  4. Communicate clearly with candidates. A simple “here is our timeline and what to expect” keeps strong applicants engaged instead of drifting toward other offers.
  5. Keep the role visible. Refresh and maintain your posting so it reaches candidates actively looking right now, not just the ones who check back in the fall.

Lead the Search Prayerfully

Momentum is not the same as panic. Keep moving with patience and dependence: “Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor over it in vain” (Psalm 127:1, CSB). Steady, prayerful diligence honors both the role and the people you serve.

The Takeaway

Summer is not a reason to pause your search. It is a reason to lead it well. The churches that keep momentum through June and July are the ones starting fall fully staffed and ready.
