Summary of Principal Functions:
The pastor is responsible to the church for proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ as led by the Holy Spirit; for using his skills in administrative leadership; for engaging in pastoral care ministries to meet the needs of persons in the church and in the community; to act as chief administrator of the ministerial and vocational staff.
Responsibilities:
- Assume the responsibility of becoming the spiritual leader of First Baptist Church, Collinsville by proclaiming the gospel and teaching the Bible as led by the Lord.
- Inform and lead the congregation to fulfill the Great Commission with vision, purpose and priority.
- Through the presence of the Holy Spirit and with God’s direction pray, plan, study and prepare to deliver original sermons on a weekly basis so that meaningful worship services are presented to the church so that lives can be touched and changed.
- Lead in church ordinances of baptism and The Lord’s Supper.
- Conduct weddings, funerals, deacon ordination, baby dedication and commissioning for mission teams.
- Visits and ministers to members and prospective members in homes, hospitals and nursing care facilities.
- Show love and compassion during difficult times.
- Lead the church in proclaiming the gospel to the community by encouraging and modeling evangelism, visitation of church members and church prospects.
- Plan and promote periods of evangelistic emphasis for the unsaved and revival for Christians.
- Be prepared and available to conduct counseling sessions for premarital, vocational, family, bereavement etc. to members of church or community in crisis as needed.
- Assist deacons, church officers and committees in performing assigned responsibilities.
- Lead and/or train when and where needed.
- Lead the church staff and lay leadership in regular evaluations of church programs, strategies and ministries in an effort to promote excellence and consistency.
- Lead the Personnel Committee in conducting yearly evaluations of both ministerial/professional staff along with office staff in order to promote accountability and excellence among staff.
- Encourage and lead the church in cooperating with Southern Baptist Convention mission efforts such as North American Missions Board and International Missions Board.
- Inform the church when associational developments arise within the Southern Baptist denomination.
- Represent the church in both the Southern Baptist Convention and the Mississippi Baptist Convention.
- Seek to educate and build awareness among members concerning the Southern Baptist Convention, Mississippi Baptist Convention Board and Lauderdale County Baptist Association concerning their work and issues that could affect First Baptist Church, Collinsville.
- Serve as moderator to conduct business meetings and when needed committee meetings.
- Oversees, along with deacons, all matters of conflict issues in the church.
- Biblically supports the church budget and monitors spending through church committees.
- Serve as administrator of the paid church staff and supervise the work of the ministry staff.
- Along with church staff, communicates with congregation through church bulletin, written and spoken announcements, church newsletter and mail outs.
- Willingly adheres to church Constitution and Bylaws along with Policies and Procedures adopted by the church.
- Exhibits a strong moral character and maintains a vital and whole personal relationship with the Lord through daily Bible study and prayer.
- Also maintains proper priorities and moral character at home with his wife and children.
Preferred Skills:
- Should have the ability to openly communicate, both verbally and written, with all church members and community; must maintain the highest level of confidentiality of all issues pertaining to the church, church membership or community
- Must have the ability to conduct meetings with deacons, church staff and church members in a loving and compassionate manner.
- Must have the ability to assist with financial planning.
Education:
Prefer a minimum of Master’s Degree and/or a Doctorate from an accredited theological seminary.
