ActiveJob Summary: The Director of Communications provides strategic leadership and oversight for churchwide communications, marketing, branding, and creative strategy at Cottonwood Creek Church. This position is responsible for ensuring church communication is clear, consistent, effective, and aligned with the mission and ministry priorities of the church. The Director works closely with pastors, senior leadership, ministry leaders, and staff to develop communication strategies, guide creative direction, strengthen and protect the Cottonwood Creek Church brand, and move projects from concept through execution.
Essential Functions:
· Lead the overall communications and marketing strategy for Cottonwood Creek Church.
· Serve as the primary steward of the Cottonwood Creek Church brand.
· Develop communication plans for sermon series, major events, seasonal campaigns, ministries, and churchwide initiatives.
· Oversee messaging across web, email, text, social media, print, signage, video, advertising, and other communication channels.
· Provide creative direction for graphic design, photography, video, environmental graphics, and promotional campaigns.
· Partner with pastors, senior leadership, and ministry leaders to understand ministry priorities and develop communication plans, messaging, audiences, timelines, and calls to action that support the mission and ministry of Cottonwood Creek Church.
· Exercise sound judgment and discretion regarding sensitive, confidential, or time-sensitive church communications, working with Senior Leadership as appropriate before information is released internally or publicly.
· Lead and develop Communications Department staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers.
· Oversee the church website and digital communication strategy.
· Manage communication calendars, project priorities, workflows, deadlines, and production schedules.
· Oversee outside vendors, printers, agencies, and creative partners as needed.
· Maintain brand standards and ensure consistent use of church and ministry identities.
· Provide oversight for churchwide signage, promotional materials, branded apparel, and environmental communication.
· Evaluate communication effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve reach, engagement, and clarity.
Job Requirements and Personal Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, journalism, design, or a related field preferred.
Job Skills: Strong strategic communication, writing, editing, proofreading, and presentation skills; strong understanding of branding, marketing, digital communications, social media, websites, email marketing, and audience engagement; ability to provide creative direction across multiple mediums; excellent organizational and project-management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, deadlines, vendors, budgets, and production schedules; strong leadership and team-development skills; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with pastors, senior leadership, ministry leaders, staff, vendors, volunteers, and church members; collaborative while able to make clear decisions and provide direction; proactive, discerning, dependable, flexible, and detail-oriented; able to anticipate communication needs and build effective systems and processes; exercises sound judgment and a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.
Personal Qualifications: Have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ with consistent evidence of fruit in your personal life; demonstrate spiritual maturity and a servant’s heart; motivated to serve God and support the mission, beliefs, leadership, and ministry philosophy of Cottonwood Creek Church; understand that church communication is about more than promoting events and should ultimately help people encounter the Gospel, find biblical community, and take meaningful next steps in their faith; ability to lead with humility, wisdom, creativity, and excellence; consistently use good judgment and demonstrate a strong willingness to do what is necessary for the safety and betterment of the church spiritually, ethically, financially, and organizationally. Membership at Cottonwood Creek Church is required.
Other Information:
· Professional experience in communications, marketing, branding, creative services, or a related field.
· Leadership or team-management experience preferred.
· Experience developing integrated communication or marketing campaigns.
· Experience managing vendors, budgets, timelines, and production processes.
· Church, ministry, nonprofit, or mission-driven communications experience is a plus.
· Due to the nature of church communications, occasional evening, weekend, Sunday, and special-event availability may be required.
