First Baptist Church of Grain Valley (suburban Kansas City) is seeking a FULL-TIME ASSOCIATE PASTOR of Discipleship and Care to join our team. This role focuses on discipleship and care for adults and helps our church Experience God, Grow in Christ, Serve with Purpose, Impact Generations. This role will be served well by a leader who recruits, equips and collaborates well. 

 

OVERVIEW

In support of the mission of First Baptist Church of Grain Valley, the The Associate Pastor of Adult Discipleship and Care provides leadership in assigned ministry areas in a way that helps people move faithfully through the church’s EGSI pathway: Experience God, Grow in Christ, Serve with Purpose, and Impact Generations. This role exists to strengthen the disciple-making ministry of the church through spiritual leadership, relational shepherding, intentional discipleship, and healthy collaboration with the church staff and lay leaders.

  • Experience God through worship, prayer, Scripture, hospitality, and meaningful connection to the gathered life of the church.
  • Grow in Christ through biblical teaching, discipleship relationships, next-step pathways, and spiritual encouragement.
  • Serve with Purpose through ministry engagement, volunteer development, member care, and equipping believers for the work of ministry.
  • Impact Generations through mentoring, evangelism, intergenerational ministry, and a long-term investment in helping people influence others for Christ.

Personal and Ministry Qualifications

  • A person of integrity with a clear passion to serve Christ and His Church.
  • A spiritually mature believer who demonstrates obedience to the Word of God and maintains a strong devotional life.
  • In alignment with the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.
  • Able to express a clear call from the Lord to ministry.
  • Willing to become a member of First Baptist Church of Grain Valley and live in the general area if required for the role.
  • Appropriately trained and equipped for the ministry assignment through education, experience, or both.
  • Experienced in ministry leadership appropriate to the position.
  • Gifted in communication, relational ministry, teamwork, and practical ministry administration.

Reports To: Pastor for daily supervision, ministry direction, and performance evaluation 

Accountable To: Personnel Committee for personnel policies, support, and review

Primary Ministry Assignments

  • Volunteer & Leader Development: Provide pastoral leadership by equipping adults to: help members grow in Christ, remain connected to the church family, serve with purpose, and influence the next generation through the EGSI discipleship pathway. Recruit, train, and shepherd leaders serving in each ministry so that teams are healthy, supported, and effective.
    • Lead and strengthen adult discipleship environments, including Sunday School classes, Bible studies, and other group pathways, so adults are growing in Scripture, community, and obedience. Help adults move from connection to maturity, from maturity to service, and from service to intergenerational impact.
    • Oversee and strengthen Senior Connection as the church’s primary monthly gathering for senior adults, fostering fellowship, encouragement, spiritual growth, and connection to the life of the church.
    • Oversee and support Recycled Teens as a regular senior adult outing ministry that builds joy, belonging, friendship, and engagement.
    • Provide vision, organization, communication, and volunteer support for senior adult ministry gatherings and activities so they serve both the spiritual and relational health of participants.
  • Provide leadership for member care in partnership with deacons, teachers, and ministry leaders to helping ensure members receive prayer support, visitation, encouragement, follow-up, crisis care, and practical shepherding.
  • Foster intergenerational ministry by encouraging those in the midlife and older adult seasons to invest in younger believers and families through prayer, mentoring, testimony, encouragement, and service.
  • Collaborative Staff Leadership: Serve as a highly collaborative member of the FBCGV staff, working closely with the Pastor, the Associate Pastor of NextGen Discipleship, and other ministry leaders to develop and implement cohesive discipleship and connection strategies for the church. This role should work in active partnership with the NextGen ministry so those in midlife and older adult seasons remain fully connected to the broader disciple-making mission of the church.
  • Teaching Team:  Serve as a part of FBCGV’s preaching and teaching team helping in sermon and lesson preparation and filling roles as needed.  Maintain a visible pastoral presence in the ministry of the church through personal relationships and assisting with visitation and funerals as needed.
