Position Summary

The Discipleship Pastor is responsible for creating, managing, and executing the aspects of our church that make disciples, equip members for service, and reach out to grow the ministries of the church. This includes working with and through the other pastors, ministers, teams, and committees responsible for the wide range of ministries at Harrisburg Baptist Church.

In making disciples, the pastor oversees the ministries of Sunday school and discipleship groups by training and developing leaders, recruiting volunteers, and coordinating curriculum. In addition, this position coordinates and collaborates with the NextGen ministers as they lead their respective ministries to make disciples of the next generation and their families.

In equipping, the pastor will develop and oversee a comprehensive and simple approach for engaging members in spiritual growth and service. This includes working with each of the pastors and ministers to provide a clear pathway for spiritual growth that each member can follow to grow, mature, and use their spiritual gifts in the ministries and opportunities of our church.

In the area of outreach, the pastor will oversee the coordination and collaboration of our efforts to engage the lost and unchurched with the gospel. This includes working alongside each of our ministers and ministries to align the efforts and resources of the church throughout the year. The goal is for all that our church does to be in coordination with one another to accomplish a mission that is greater than any one ministry can do on its own.

In addition, the pastor will work with the men’s and women’s ministries of the church, variously assigned committees, and participate in the weekly pastoral care of the church members.

Discipleship, Equipping, & Outreach (50-60%)

Develop and lead HBC in a gospel-centered discipleship strategy from Preschool through Senior Adults that includes Sunday school and provides a clearly defined pathway for growth and a pipeline for Leadership.

Discipleship Pathway | Develop and oversee a simple and effective series of next steps that help our members grow spiritually and serve in the church.

Leadership Pipeline | In coordination with the Senior Pastor, develop a process for identifying and training leaders for the church.

Equip to Serve | In coordination with the leadership of the church, identify the church’s ministry needs, help members identify their gifting, and develop systems to help people serve.

Equip to Share | In coordination with the Missions Pastor, provide ongoing opportunities for members to be equipped to share the gospel.

Ensure Sound Doctrine | In coordination with the other pastors, strive to ensure that what is taught at Harrisburg is faithful to the Scriptures and consistent with our statement of faith.

Coordinate Curriculum | Oversee the development and choosing of curriculum used at Harrisburg Baptist Church to be effective, relevant, and consistent with our statement of faith and mission.

Outreach | In coordination with the Minister of Connections and Administration and through collaboration with the NextGen Ministries, give Leadership and vision to the ongoing outreach efforts of the church.

NextGen Ministries | Provide Leadership and encouragement to the ministry staff working with Preschool through Youth Ministry by leading the team to accomplish the mission and vision of the church in each area of ministry.

Sunday school | Oversee the growth and development of Sunday school and its Leadership in the church.

Missional Communities | Provide Leadership and oversight to develop missional communities and their leaders. Missional communities are not a replacement for Sunday school but are bible studies that meet in homes and businesses to engage the unchurched and move them into the life of our church.

Men’s Ministry | In coordination with the Men’s Ministry Team, oversee the accomplishment of the church’s mission and vision in the lives of men in our community.

Women’s Ministry | In coordination with the Women’s Ministry Team and their staff liaison, oversee the accomplishment of the church’s mission and vision in the lives of women in our community.

Pastoral Leadership (20-30%)

As one of the pastors, there are several expectations and responsibilities that this person will be expected to perform.

Teaching & Equipping | Regularly teach and equip the church members through Sunday school, worship services, Bible studies, and Equipping classes.

Counseling & Pastoral Care | Serve as one of our primary pastoral counselors to our members, visit the church members in the hospital, and officiate weddings and funerals when the opportunity arises.

Mentoring & Multiplying Leaders | Invest annually in a small group of growing leaders within the church. Mentor and invest in the members of Harrisburg Baptist Church who feel called to ministry and missions.

Team Responsibilities (10-20%)

Other duties as assigned, including General Expectations for Ministerial Staff.
Work as needed with the Committee on Committees, Sunday school Director, Men’s Committee, Evangelism Committee, and other committees as required.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in a field of ministry from an accredited college, university, or seminary.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an Associate Pastor, Family ministry, Education/Discipleship ministry, or Next-Gen Ministries.
  • Previous ministry experience in a church of more than 500 people in attendance preferred.
  • Strong managerial and Leadership skills combined with an exceptional relational and networking ability.
  • The proven ability to identify, equip, mobilize and lead volunteers.
  • The proven ability to manage people, budgets, short and long-range planning, and implement a plan in church environments.

Personal Characteristics

  • Possess strong foundational knowledge of the Bible; formal theological training is required in the form of a Masters from an accredited Seminary or University.
  • Affirm a clear call to serve in the local church and a commitment to the varied expressions of the church’s ministry.
  • Be committed to working as a part of the team.
  • A shepherd of the team who prefers to develop leaders and multiply his ministry.
  • A self-motivated individual that can balance the pursuit of vision with the day-to-day demands of pastoral ministry.
  • The proven ability to think strategically and work with various ministry models, processes, and paradigms.

Reporting Relationships: 

  • Reports directly to the Senior Pastor
  • Works in partnership with the Worship Pastor, Missions Pastor, and Minister of Connections and Administration
  • Directly oversees the Children’s Minister, Youth Minister, and the Assistant to the Sr. Pastor and Discipleship Pastor.
