Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, established in 1835, is a Southern Baptist church made up of a multi-generational, energetic, and growing congregation. Members are actively engaged in thriving worship, children’s, youth, missions, women’s, men’s, and sports ministries to grow believers while intentionally connecting with the community. The people of Pleasant Grove are passionate about impacting this ever-changing culture with the never-changing love and message of Jesus Christ. Pleasant Grove sits on 25 acres located on the outskirts of Owensboro, Kentucky and is currently operating debt free with a new sanctuary, offices, and classrooms (built in 2020), as well as a Grove Kids Daycare facility, multiple playgrounds, baseball diamonds complex, gymnasium, parsonage, and beautiful cemetery.

Senior Pastor Ministry Description:

The senior pastor is the chief under-Shepherd, vision-caster, preacher, and leader of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He is responsible for leading, managing, supervising, and ministering to the entire PGBC staff, leadership, and congregation. The senior pastor is expected to collaborate with other ministerial staff and contribute to the team spirit of the staff and leadership through fellowship, encouragement, cooperation, and prayer support as he leads the church to serve our Lord Jesus Christ.

The senior pastor is expected to be a servant leader. The senior pastor is expected to live an exemplary life modeling the call, character, and competencies becoming of a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The “Called” Senior Pastor will:

a) Love Jesus with his heart, mind, soul, and strength and submit to the Lordship of Christ.

b) Believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God.

c) Exhibit a lifestyle and leadership qualities consistent with 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

d) Be in agreement with and adhere to the PGBC Bylaws and policies and procedures.

e) Be in agreement with and guided by basic Southern Baptist doctrine.

f) If married, have complete support from his wife for the call to a new place of ministry. She should be active in the life of the church while striving to maintain a healthy home life.

Responsible To: Deacon Body, Personnel Committee

General Responsibilities:

a) Provide solid Bible-based preaching and teaching that is relevant and challenges listeners to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Communicate with excellence by providing avenues of application for Biblical truth that the congregation understands and is motivated to incorporate into their lives.

b) Work with staff to plan and conduct rich and meaningful worship services that lead the church to magnify Christ and edify the body through a variety of methods and experiences.

c) Take initiative and exhibit creative leadership with staff and church in developing a strategic plan and vision for PGBC.

d) Conduct counseling sessions and engage in providing pastoral care and healing for those who are bruised, broken, and have strayed. Give Biblical advice in times of crisis and lead the church to minister to the sick, poor, dying, and bereaved.

e) When requested, perform wedding ceremonies, provide pre-marital counseling, and officiate funerals.

f) Responsible for supporting the work of the ministry team, deacons, church officers, committees, and all church ministries by fostering and maintaining a close working relationship with staff and leadership, attending meetings as required, and giving input as needed.

g) Cooperate with association, state, and denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern; keep the church informed of denominational development; represent the church in civic matters.

Expectations:

a) Give leadership to staff and congregation by recommending and implementing actions that fulfill the vision and mission of PGBC. Equip, encourage, and empower leaders to fulfill God’s call to serve with passion and excellence.

b) Encourage ministry and missions involvement to members through personal example, preaching/teaching, training, giving of resources, and opportunities for personal and corporate action.

c) Regularly present opportunity for salvation in the worship services and personally demonstrate lifestyle evangelism by engaging and developing relationships with those who are not yet believers.

d) Provide positive leadership to staff, setting the tone for ministry, and being available, approachable, and respectfully responsive to concerns, issues, changes, and feedback.

e) Spend quality and regular time in personal Bible study and prayer that prepares for preaching, teaching, and leadership of PGBC. Model the importance of spiritual disciplines and total dependence on God for all decisions made, both corporately and individually.

f) Model the importance of family as God designed by caring for and spending time with yours.

g) Encourage fellowship and unity in the church through the development and deepening of relationships and small groups.
