Job Description
Student Discipleship Pastor​

General Information
The Student Discipleship Pastor will be a full-time salaried position.

Primary Functions:
The Student Discipleship Pastor, under the leadership of the Senior Pastor and in cooperation with all other
staff members, is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive ministry program for students in grades 6-12
in the church.

Qualifications:
1. A born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. An individual striving to glorify God through their lifestyle.
3. An individual who has a burden for the salvation of lost souls.
4. The person must be evangelical in theology in accordance with the “Baptist Faith and Message” (2000
edition, http://www.sbc.net/bfm2000/bfm2000.asp), in full agreement with the “Nashville Statement”
(cbmw.org).
5. A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years proven pastoral experience is preferred.
6. Someone who senses a definite “call” to student ministry and who has demonstrated that call by
experience.
7. Evidence of ability to design and implement an age appropriate discipleship program.
8. Ability to discover, train, equip and encourage others in Student Ministries.
9. Proven ability to work well with others and motivate them to achieve desired results.
10. Someone who has a grasp of the various aspects of student ministries and an ability to provide creative
leadership.

Responsibilities: ​
1. Personal development and family relationships:
a. Continue developing yourself spiritually and intellectually through participation in appropriate
seminars, by spending time in personal devotions, and by developing close relationships with
mature believers who are able to disciple and minister to you.
b. Build strong family relationships with your spouse and children. Allow yourself enough time to
spend with your family.
c. Participate in Christian fellowship activities such: as Bible studies, church-related social functions
and regularly scheduled services of Southview Baptist Church.

2. Service responsibilities.
a. Set the vision for the student ministries of Southview Baptist Church with a plan to lead all adult
and student leaders to partner in carrying out the stated vision.
● The vision of the student ministries should align with that of the church—
Southview Baptist Church exists to nurture within one another an ever-increasing knowledge of
and fulfillment in God that inspires us to reflect Christ and make disciples.
Our Vision is that God would be glorified through people being conformed to the image of Christ
as evidenced by:
● Treasuring God above all things
● Thinking Biblically
● Reflecting godly character
● Sharing truth and love
● Possessing an eternal mindset

b. Develop and lead discipleship according to the vision and purpose of the student ministries
● Know the sheep. Ability and desire to know the strengths, weaknesses, traits, opportunities,​
and culture of the believers at Southview. To personally know individuals in the church in
order to know the spiritual maturity and needs, identify potential leaders, and to know how to
better lead, feed, equip, and protect the flock as a whole.
● Feed the sheep. Feed the flock of God through expository teaching and preaching
(conveying​the original intent of the biblical authors and able to demonstrate how that applies
to the congregation), involvement in personal discipleship (mentoring), and to offer and/or
refer for biblical counseling. Able to teach and preach depending on the Holy Spirit for the
purpose of awakening a savor and love for the Lord Jesus Christ and an ever-increasing
fulfillment in Him.
● Lead the sheep. Lead by personal example by: knowing, loving, and reverencing Christ​
personally; feeding personally on the Word of God and prayer; modeling the heart of the Chief
Shepherd; living a godly life; leading one’s own family in a way that makes much of Christ;
involvement in and support for church functions; and one-on-one discipleship and disciple
making. Leading by proclaiming, explaining, and ensuring the Southview Baptist Church​
Purpose/Mission/Values ​statement is clearly understood and carried out in all areas of church
ministry. To lead the church to grow spiritually and develop ministry skills for the work of the
ministry (individuals and corporately).
● Protect the sheep. Protect by instruction and warning from Scripture, being aware of local
influences of false teaching, deceptive doctrines, and common enticements that draw
members away from Christ. Protect the integrity of the pulpit by ensuring that all guest
preachers agree with and do not contradict the Southview Baptist Church
Purpose/Mission/Vision Statement. Leading in the administering of church discipline (private
warning and steps to restore wandering sheep; Matt 18:15-17).
c. Plan or participate in events that are strategic in enhancing the spiritual growth of students.
d. Lead in the recruitment and training of adult leaders to serve in the student ministries.
● Maintain an Adult Leader Application and process for orienting new leaders

● Meet regularly with adult leaders
● Build into your team with consistent training and equipping
● Pray for, encourage, love, and support your adult leaders.
e. Seek to minister to the parents of the students in partnership with the overall ministries of
Southview Baptist Church.
f. Counsel students to assess life through the lens of scripture.
g. Prepare and oversee an annual budget for those areas of ministry under your direct supervision.
h. Perform various administrative duties essential to the student ministries.
i. Serve as a member of the Connection and Coordination Team and help to integrate the student
ministries with the other ministries of the church toward accomplishment of the church’s stated
mission.
j. Be faithful in attendance to, and involvement in, general church programs.
k. Attend scheduled Staff Meetings.

3​. ​ As a minister of the gospel and leader within the local church, the Student Discipleship Pastor should seek​
to:
a. Order his conduct in keeping with the principles of the New Testament, and seek the help of the
Holy Spirit that he may be faithful and efficient in his work (Eph. 4:1).
b. Be regular and punctual in attendance; and in case of unavoidable absence, give notice thereof as
far in advance as possible (I Cor. 4:2).
c. Contribute his tithe to his church’s budget (Mal. 3:10).
d. Cooperate wholeheartedly in the plans and activities of the church (1 Cor. 3:9).
e. Be loyal to the program of the church, striving to attend all services (Heb. 10:25).
f. Make witnessing a major endeavor (Prov. 11:30).
g. Pray regularly for the church, pastor, students, parents, etc. (1 Thess. 5:17).
h. Maintain unity within the church by guarding his speech and promoting unity and cooperation
rather than strife.
i. Support the pastor of the church and address concerns to him as soon as the need arises.
j. Attempt to put down murmurings and complaints, facing them frankly, and dealing with them
fairly.
k. Hold his tongue against spreading gossip or talking critically about others.
l. Abstain from the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
m. Apply the teachings of Christ in moral and social issues of his everyday life (James 1:22).

Our Responsibilities:​

1. We will pray for you and your family.
2. We will supply you with those things which are necessary to perform your ministry, within budgetary
confines and practicality.
3. We will allow you to be yourself and to use the personal gifts which God has given you.

Working Relationship:
The Student Discipleship Pastor work under the general supervision of the Senior Pastor and Administration
Team. He will work closely with the office staff and various ministry groups of the church. All concerns
regarding the position, salary, job expectations, etc. shall be addressed to the Administration Team.
The position of the Student Discipleship Pastor requires flexibility in hours available for work, including
evenings and weekends. The Student Discipleship Pastor should be in the office a sufficient amount of time for
accessibility to members of the congregation and for regular communication with members of the church staff.

Vacation and Other Leave Time
The Student Discipleship Pastor will receive three weeks of paid vacation per year (including four Sundays and
three Wednesdays per year) in addition to regular holiday leave. Requests for vacation time should be
submitted in writing to the Personnel Group two weeks prior for approval. The Student Discipleship Pastor
will be responsible for securing individuals to carry out necessary duties in his absence. Any other time off for
any reason must be approved by the Personnel Group.
Term of Ministry:
The Student Discipleship Pastor’s calling shall take place at a meeting called for that purpose, of which at least
one week’s public notice has been given. Election shall be by secret ballot, an affirmative vote by three-fourths
(3/4) of church members present and voting being necessary for a choice.
The Student Discipleship Pastor thus elected shall serve until the relationship is terminated either by his or the
church’s request. He shall give at least 30 days notice at the time of resignation before terminating his
responsibilities. Likewise, the church shall give at least 30 days notice before terminating the Student
Discipleship Pastor’s services, unless otherwise decided by the Administration Team.
