Position Summary

The Vice President for Administration provides oversight of the general business concerns of the Executive Committee, with a special focus on financial leadership as the Chief Financial Officer.  This person is part of the Executive Leadership Team and serves as the principal financial manager for the Executive Committee.  This position requires exercising independent judgment in initiating and carrying forward specific ministry plans related to the budgeting, accounting, auditing, investing, human resources, facilities management, information technology, and legal concerns.  This person works directly with various committees of the Executive Committee to implement policies and procedures in accordance with the SBC Business and Financial Plan.

The ideal candidate will be committed to overseeing a wide range of business interests, but with special training and experience in financial management.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serves as the principal financial planner and budget director in developing practices and procedures to manage nearly $400 million annually to support the missions and ministries of the SBC:
    • SBC Cooperative Program Allocation Budget: Distributes nearly $200 million annually to the national missions and ministries of the SBC based on the SBC approved allocation percentages (and approximately $200 million annually in designated gifts distributed in support of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering® and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering®).
    • SBC Executive Committee/SBC Operating Budget: Manages a $7 million annual budget to facilitate the ministry assignments of the Executive Committee and support the overall operations of the SBC (majority of funds provided through the SBC Cooperative Program Allocation Budget).
  2. Leads the Administrative Services Team, and any other employees as assigned by the President, and coordinates an integrated approach for the use of financial data in budget formulation, administration, and reporting to ensure high levels of accountability and integrity.
  3. Resources the Executive Committee with responsible investment management and cultivates donor development in coordination with the Southern Baptist Foundation, the trust agency of the SBC (SBF manages over $215 million in assets).
  4. Operates as the chief accountant of the Executive Committee with responsibilities for development, maintenance, and operation of a sound accounting system, and coordinates the annual independent audit.
  5. Appraises periodic reports and advises the CEO of progress attained in achieving financial objectives or reaching specific financial goals. Drafts reports, staff papers, agenda items, and similar material for use by the CEO and Executive Committee.
  6. Coordinates all aspects of Human Resources for the Executive Committee.
  7. Manages the SBC Building, including all facilities improvements, equipment, use of space, and tenant relationships..
  8. Manages Information technology for the Executive Committee (including shared SBC building tenant use)..
  9. Coordinates legal services for the Executive Committee.
  10. Develops and strengthens cooperative relationships with state conventions to prioritize, elevate, and accelerate giving through the Cooperative Program.
  11. Assists all SBC entities to facilitate the maximum effectiveness of the financial policies and practices of the entities of the SBC in accordance with the SBC Business and Financial Plan.
  12. Maintains a thorough working knowledge of financial procedures and the practices used by the SBC entities.
  13. Serves various standing committees of the SBC Executive Committee, as directed by the CEO, to support these groups by providing research assistance and recommendations as needed to assist them in carrying out their assigned duties and responsibilities in accordance with the governing documents of the SBC.
  14. Performs other duties and responsibilities as the President may assign.

Qualifications:

  1. Analytical demand — Should be of a reasonably high order, but not completely dominant.
  2. Forward planning — Should be strongly oriented to a detailed planning approach to all questions.
  3. Administrative demand — Should be oriented toward active direction of others.
  4. Independent action — Should be able to balance strong self-initiative with guided direction to achieve successful resolution of problems and ensure effective and efficient implementation of plans.
  5. Original thinking — Should be constantly appraising current concepts and methods, while maintaining a moderately conservative attitude toward introducing new concepts and methods.
  6. Team leadership — Should be capable of leading and working in a team environment to serve effectively and achieve superior outcomes.
  7. Express ideas in writing — Should be capable of stating ideas clearly and succinctly.
  8. Education — Should have a broad base training with specialization in finance and be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.
  9. Experience — Should have experience in accounting or financial activities. Background should indicate a dedication to Baptist principles, and the absence of activities inconsistent with Baptist ideals.
