The vice president for communications reports to the president and chief executive officer of the SBC Executive Committee and serves on the Executive Leadership Team. He/she directs communications strategies of the Executive Committee in advancing the mission of the SBC and the Executive Committee.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the communications team of the Executive Committee, including creating overall strategies and methods for continuously improving effectiveness in this area
  • Provide administrative and editorial oversight of Baptist Press.
  • Oversee SBC, Executive Committee, and Baptist Press websites and social media.
  • Create media content like generating Baptist Press story ideas, writing Baptist Press stories, hosting podcasts, consulting on marketing plans, etc.
  • Monitor SBC-related news, interact with secular and state convention media members, and coordinate media requests and responses for SBC President and EC President.
  • Coordinate Cooperative Program promotion with SBC entities, state conventions, and ethnic fellowships. This may include developing resources, leading meetings, executing major events, creating marketing campaigns, facilitating communications among partners, etc.
  • Enhance partnerships with SBC entities, state conventions, associations, and ethnic fellowships
  • Represent the Executive Committee at state conventions, associations, and ethnic fellowship meetings.
  • Lead Baptist Press staff to coordinate overall coverage of the SBC annual meeting, including the press room and press conferences.  
  • Develop communications and Baptist Press policy guidelines for consideration by the Executive Committee.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the president and chief executive officer.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution; Masters degree preferred.
  • Active membership in a Southern Baptist church.
  • Formal theological training or experience not required but preferred.
  • 10+ years experience and demonstrated competence in corporate communications.
  • Deep understanding of the Southern Baptist Convention, its entities and ministries.
  • Proficient with communications technology tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to engage with Southern Baptists
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
