A new year has a way of stirring questions we’ve been carrying quietly. Maybe the last season has stretched you thin. Maybe your passion for ministry has shifted. Or maybe God is prompting you to consider something new, even if you’re not sure what that means yet.
If you feel that tension, you’re not alone. Many faithful servants step into January wondering whether the Lord is preparing them for a new place of service.
Here are five words of encouragement as you discern your next ministry step:
1. Seek the Lord before seeking a job
Before polishing a résumé or browsing openings, slow down and pray. Ask the Lord to clarify not only what He wants you to do but who He wants you to become. James reminds us, “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him” (James 1:5, CSB).
Let His Word shape your direction more than your circumstances.
2. Pay attention to your desires and burdens
Sometimes the Spirit nudges us through a growing desire for a particular kind of ministry or people group. Other times He redirects through a burden—a holy dissatisfaction that won’t go away. Neither is accidental.
3. Assess the season you’re in
Ask questions like:
- Am I spiritually healthy enough for a transition?
- Is my desire to leave based on calling or comfort?
- Is my family ready if God opens a new door?
Wise counsel from pastors and trusted believers can help you see what you may be missing.
4. Take small steps of obedience
You don’t need the full picture to take the next right step. Update your résumé. Pray with your spouse. Reach out to a mentor. Explore opportunities on SBC Jobs without assuming anything yet.
5. Trust God’s timing
Some seasons move quickly. Others stretch longer than expected. Both are under God’s care. If He is leading you toward a new role, He will confirm it in His time, with His peace.
A Closing word of encouragement
Entering a new year with uncertainty can be uncomfortable, but it can also be a doorway into deeper dependence on the Lord. Keep your eyes on Him, keep your hands open, and trust that He knows exactly where you will be most fruitful for His glory.
